When Shakina Rajendram, pregnant with twins, went into labour at just 21 weeks and six days, she had no idea what the future held. She had been transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital because it’s one of the few hospitals in Canada equipped with the expertise to resuscitate babies born at just 22 weeks. Born an hour after midnight at the 22-week mark, Adiah and Adrial weighed only 330 grams and 420 grams respectively. Both babies were immediately transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

While the twins were in the NICU, Rajendram and her husband participated in their care as part of Sinai Health’s family-integrated care program (FICare). The FICare program empowers parents to play an active role in caring for their infant in the Mount Sinai NICU right from the start, which research shows can have many positive benefits for parents and babies.

After six months, the twins were discharged home. A few months later, their remarkable journey captured global attention, earning them a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the lightest and youngest twins to celebrate their first birthday.
